SHAPE consists of two, three-week summer sessions. Students may attend one or both sessions. 

Eligibility: All current high school students (freshmen to seniors) are eligible for the commuter option. Students* who are 16 and above are eligible for the residential option.

*Please note that the residential option for Summer 2026 is mostly reserved for students who currently live and attend schools in the US. Only a limited amount of international students will be selected. For further information about the residential program, please visit our FAQs. 

We use the Columbia Graduate Engineering application system - if you see a Graduate Engineering header while looking for the application, don't worry! You are in the right place. 

While filling out the application, please reference the "SHAPE Application Instructions" page. There are details here that will help you work through the other sections. If you are asked to fill out any information that does not apply to you (for example, you do not have a GPA), please estimate to the best of your ability. If you are unsure or want to clarify, please email [email protected].

Application Requirements

Essays
  • Respond to three essay questions
  • Students applying for residential are required to complete one additional essay question
Uploaded Documents
  • Copy of most recent high school transcript*, or a report card
  • Resume with work experience or school and extracurricular activities 
  • Letter of recommendation (submitted by a math or science teacher)

*Transcripts and Recommendations must be in English or come with an official translation

Application Fee
  • The application fee is $50. For applications submitted before the priority deadline, this fee will be waived. For students applying for a need-based scholarship, please have your parent/guardian reach out to [email protected] for a waiver. 

Dates and Deadlines:

  • The application for Summer 2027 will open in November.
  • Please extend requests to your providers and submit your application as soon as you are ready. We will allow a grace period of one week after the deadline to receive supporting documents for each application. During rolling admissions, please ask your providers to upload supporting documents as soon as possible. We cannot review your application until it is complete.
